Beside being a temporary residence, the Palmetto House is also a Soup Kitchen which serves meals to others who are hungry, but who are not residents.

It is an opportunity for those of limited income, the majority of which are elderly, to save on food money. In 2005, the number of meals served to both the residents and the Soup Kitchen guests was 4,338.
